  • UN deploys more peacekeepers to South Sudan's Unity state

    The United Nations mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is  sending 150 peacekeepers to Unity state to protect civilians who are  being targeted in clashes between the government and rebel troops, the  mission said on Thursday.

    Nearly 1.76 million  people have been displaced internally since fighting broke out in 2013  between troops loyal to President Salva Kiir and the former vice  president he sacked, Riek Machar, the UN said.

  • Ebola Outbreak in East Africa


    World agencies and neighbouring countries on Friday hiked their   response to an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo  as  the toll from the notorious disease mounted.

    A World  Health  Organization (WHO) emergency panel met to determine whether the   outbreak was "a public health event of international concern" -- a move   that would step up global action.

    Police in Mpigi and Butambala Districts are investigating circumstances  under which a man was reportedly killed after testifying in a land case  at Mpigi Magistrates Court.

    Eye witnesses who spoke to this reporter  after the incident on Thursday afternoon (May 18) said that Ibrahim  Bazanye, 28, a resident of Butaaka Village in Butambala District, was  seen engaging in a scuffle with his abductors a few meters from Mpigi  Magistrates Court premises before they pushed him into a waiting saloon  car and drove off.
